Introducing Stephen (Steve) Hazlett, Baedeker’s Venue Manager

Steve Hazlett has spent more than three decades honing his wine knowledge and hospitality skills.  His philosophy is simple. “Provide the best possible experience with the finest local produce available. Ensure a balanced wine and drinks list and treat and serve your guests the way that you would like to be. Repeat, Repeat, Repeat.”

Steve has worked in roles as diverse as Company Director, Restaurant Manager, Bar Manager and Sommelier at venues such as Spicers Retreats, Donna Chang, Dan Murphy’s, Restaurant Two and Jameson’s. Discovering new flavours, products, and techniques is his passion and Steve has been incredibly fortunate to have had several mentors including Jamie Brotherstone, Thierry Galichet & Peter Marchant (among others) to guide him along the way. Completing a vintage with Barossa producer Kym Teusner was a dream come true and something he hopes to one day do again.

Steve believes we should celebrate and always make the time to enjoy what our local farmers have lovingly provided us with.

“Life is too bloody short not to applaud and celebrate our wonderful local artisans and the local producers. Acknowledging their contribution (the time and energy it takes to craft quality produce and wine), and the respect they have for their land to hand over to the next generation is truly inspiring.”

As Venue Manager, Steve is taking charge and is ready to share his knowledge with all our guests.  We invite you to share a glass or two with Steve and let him share his stories with you at the bar or at one of our upcoming events.

What is it about Baedeker that initially drew you to the role of venue manager?

The role is pretty much the dream gig, great people to work with and a supportive Management team can’t ever be understated or overvalued especially during these times. The venue inspires me creatively, it’s so unique and as soon as I enter, I am reminded of just how special the building is and what unique memories can be created within the space.

What feedback do you regularly receive from clients?

The best part is seeing the expression on people’s faces when they walk in for the first time, the secret rooms and unique spaces are a feature most people don’t expect. After having spent some time with the Baedeker family in our beautiful venue, they are always keen to return for more.

Tell us a little about the Baedeker wine and beverage menus

Our wine and beverage menus have been curated with history firmly in mind. The lists feature old and rare wines, classic cocktails, boutique producers, distilleries, and breweries.  As much as possible the lists are unashamedly Australian, however, we cannot forget where the stories began and have included selections from around the globe.
